About us

Timber structures in stud, heavy timber, SIPs & cross laminated panels

What you can get from us.

What we do:

Byron Backyard make competitively-priced residential timber fencing, from treated pine or Australian hardwood.

We are a useful mob, and you can also find us building architecturally-designed structures; all prefabricated and delivered for assembly by your licensed carpenter, or for your Owner-Builder project.

Our kits can be frame-only, or with everything needed to complete the envelope (roof, windows, cladding, doors). We can help sort foundations in addition.

We are based in Northern New South Wales, and can supply anywhere in Australia, providing there is a transport network to get the kit to you.

Who we build for:

With regard to heavy timber frame, we will only build for those who understand it’s a very involved artisan craft, and is priced accordingly.

With regards to the stud-frame cabin kits, these are commercially produced and come with the requisite ‘Form 15  / 16’, to give your contracted carpenter assurance of build quality. Every effort has been made to offer these kits at the best value for the customer.

Bendigo 20 – 40 sqm

Way back in Bendigo, miners came into town with kitset cabin frames.  Cheap and quick to assemble, the miners could then get on with what they had come to town to do.

Byron Backyard’s Bendigo miner’s cottage is available in two building formats: Heavy timber frame, and pre-nailed stud wall cassettes.  The latter remains true to the ‘cheap & quick’, the former is for the aficionado who wants something more substantial in form.

The heavy timber frame Bendigo miner’s cottage (40 sqm) is a four-bent structure with a central bay, hosting the front & rear doorway plus access alcove to bed & bath.  The stud wall cassette Bendigo is available in 20 & 40 sqm versions.

New World Dutch Barn

The ‘New World’…back in the 17th Century, the Dutch – amongst others, such as the Swedes and English, had their colonies in Nth America. The Dutch – and the Germans amongst them – began to build barns to meet their subsistence farm needs.  A simple design soon gained ascendency: a design with a central nave for threshing wheat and cart access, and an isle off each side of it for livestock pens (the British had their ‘English Barn’).

BBS can build a New World Dutch Barn for your rural property.  The design lends itself well to social venue use. And with some internal walls: am impressive barn-home ‘barndominium’.

We can build these engineer-approved frames barn-size, or backyard-cottage size, to suit your requirements.  eg barn: 150 sqm envelope + loft from $150,000 incl. ex yard.

Heavy timber frame – P&B

Take a log, run it through a sawmill four times and you have dimensional lumber;  a large post or beam. Calculate, measure, mark and cut precisely and join multiple posts and beams according to engineer-approved plans and you have a heavy timber frame, or post & beam structure. Such structures lend themselves to showcasing the timber of which they are made, and can form great rooms with high vaulted ceilings and large openings ideal for sub-tropical and temperate living.

Milled post and beam structures are our specialty.

BB Process

BB offers production and supply of timber cabin kits, which are delivered in components, ready for assembly.
You will need to appoint a licenced tradesman to build the foundation, raise the frame and complete the structure. We provide documentation and are happy to provide assistance; our focus is on making the superior timber frame.

Steps to getting your frame kit:

1) Choose from one of the cabin kit frames.

2) Contact BB to discuss your requirements.

3) Frame agreed-upon, contract signed and 10% deposit is paid. A ‘cooling-off’ period of seven days guarantees full refund.

4) Your frame is produced and you will be kept updated on progress with email and pictures.

5) Plans and engineering excluding subfloor will be provided as standard, and should you choose: with subfloor on confirmation of footings.
We can assist with the application to council for your DA-CC, BASIX and occupancy certificate where required.

6) Prior to being sent, the balance of the sale price to be paid in full.

7) If we are not involved with assembly, the frame is designed to be assembled by competent people, following a carefully-produced step-by-step procedure relevant to the customer’s particular frame.
